Course Description:
This course will focus on two fiction writers, Virginia Woolf and Jeanette Winterson, whose short stories and novels span the first (Woolf) and second (Winterson) halves of the century and represent a range of styles: realism; modernist and postmodernist experimentation; fantasy; magical realism; and historical fiction. Our purpose will be threefold: to gain exposure to the wide range of genres that characterize twentieth-century fiction; to examine the writings of Woolf and Winterson in depth, observing the shifts within their careers; and to explore the different paradigms for literary criticism that scholars have used to analyze their texts. We will read a series of Woolf's and Winterson's short stories and novels, accompanied by literary criticism informed by a broad range of theories (genre theory; structuralism and poststructuralism; psychoanalysis; feminist, queer, and postcolonial theories), in order to register the stylistic range of their work and--by extension--that of twentieth-century fiction.
