My teaching comprises all levels of German language, and all periods of German culture and literature. However, I specialize in the areas of sixteenth and seventeenth- century German literature. My book on Johann Fischart’s Geschichtklitterung (1590) examines one of the most outstanding and puzzling works of German literature in the second half of the sixteenth century. Recently, I published a translation of Thomas Bernhard’s Der Weltverbesserer (The World-Fixer), a contemporary masterpiece available to English readers for the first time. While echoing the dramatic works of Samual Becket, Heiner Müller and Peter Handke, The World-Fixer is quintessentially Bernhardian and one of his most stage-worthy plays. This translation is partly the fruit of my life-long fascination with the world of theater, which includes several years of acting experience with theaters in Germany and France.

I also collaborated on the production of the documentary film Songs of the Badius, written, directed and produced by ethnomusicologist Susan Hurley-Glowa. Soon to be released in a trilingual version (English, Portuguese, German) on DVD. Please follow this link to the film's website:
