A Reindeer Roundup

at Brigade No. 4

Below are some scenes from a reindeer roundup at Brigade No. 4 of the village of Snezhnoe that occurred in the summer of 1996. Click on the images to see a full-sized version.

The Brigade started by walking among the reindeer and looking them over, picking out the ones they wanted to lasso.
The deer became agitated and began to circle around and around the group of herders.
Next came the lassoing of the deer. They used lassos made of reindeer hide, and looped this around the antlers of the deer (see the photo at the very top of this page).
Once they snagged a deer, they worked together to reel it in, almost like a fish on a line.  Then they grabbed the deer by the antlers and held it still, while one herder came close with a knife, took aim, and stabbed the deer with a precise hit to the heart.  The deer died very quickly and with a minimum of pain.
As soon as the deer stopped breathing, someone moved in and began the butchering process.  They know how to use every part of the deer -- for food, clothing, tools (like lassos), and artwork.
Soon everyone was at work -- some were still rounding up and lassoing deer, while others were hard at work skinning and processing the carcasses.
Afterwards, this young couple relaxed and had a smoke in the field where the roundup had taken place.
Everyone eventually moved over to a nearby stream to wash up and have a drink, and feel refreshed.
