Title: Localized cod trawling in Unimak Pass

When: 3 April 2005

Who: Peter Munroe (FIT, NMFS)

Peter gave a great talk about current efforts for research and managers to work together to better understand what is going on with cod populations as a result of the fishery just outside of Unimak Pass.

Cod populations were measured before and after the fishery both in and outside of a no-trawl zone.

Findings are mixed at this point, but it appears that on the temporal scale used in this study, the effects of the fishery are not very distinct.

Peter's group also tagged fish to look at immigration and emmigration from other areas and found that cod do in fact migrate in and out of the area that is so heavily fished, possibly replenishing the stocks.
