Title: Salmon excluders to reduce by-catch in the pollock fishery

When: 16 March 2005

Who: Craig Rose (RACE, AFSC)

Craig is a member of the Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineering division of the National Marine Fisheries Service whose goal is to mitigate bycatch problems.

To do this, Craig and his associates have conducted research to aid in the development of fishing gear technology capable of both effective fishing and bycatch reduction.

The first step in this process was to develop an underwater video system to observe the behavior of bycatch and target species in and around trawl nets. This group tested and improved separation devices based on behavior observations and feedback from industry experts. The initial preformance experiment indicated a salmon escape rate of 12% with minimal pollock loss (2%).
