Isolating the proteases from the hepatopancreas for King crab for medicinal uses
Research project description:
Aided with crab tissue sampling for Dr. Malinovskii, a Research Assistant Professor of the Department Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. The purpose was to initiate a project regarding purification of an enzyme known as collagenase. This enzyme will be cloned and researched for use in reducing the scar tissue from extensive surgeries and burn victims.
Role in research :
Gathered a team of four volunteers and coordinated King crab collection
and space with UniSea Seafoods. Over a period of 2 days, the group collected the hepatopancreases from approximately 100 red king crabs and stored them in liquid nitrogen for analysis at the Univ. of Miama.
