Title:
Fur seal research on Bogoslof Island

Research project description:
Researchers from the National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML), the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Dalhousie University are collaborating on a project called “Seasonal Foraging Strategies and Consequences for North Fur Seals at Colonies with Opposite Trends,” comparing the foraging behavior and habitat of Fur Seals on the Pribilof Islands and Bogoslof Island. Another NMML project called “Northern Fur population estimates at Bogoslof Island,” looked to estimate pup production, population size, and trends in abundance of fur seals at Bogoslof Island.

Role in research :
Organized local logistics, personnel, equipment and supplies. Organized a 3 day, 5 person construction effort to aid NMML personnel in building a research cabin for field work on Bogoslof.

Products:
NMML and UAF personnel have given 5 community talks at the Museum of the Aleutians and have aided in writing numerous newspaper articles to update the community on their research findings.
