Title:
Modifying standard groundfish pots to fish selectively for octopus reducing the by-catch of cod and crab

Research project description:
Co-PI of a collaborative project with ADF&G looking at the effectiveness of modifying groundfish pots so they may be used to effectively fish for octopus while decreasing the incidental catch of crab and groundfish (cod). Final goal of this study was to define, in the ADF&G commissioner’s permit, acceptable gear for directed octopus fishing.

Role in research :
Worked with ADF&G representatives over a 6 day charter sampling groundfish pots, measuring crab, cod and octopus captured and taggining octopus by three different means: spaghetti tags, Peterson disc tags and NMT Visible Implant Elastomer tags.
