KRILL STRANDING RESPONSE

Title:
Response to a massive die-off of krill on the shores of Unalaska.

Response description:
15 - 20 October 2006. Millions of Thysanoessa spinerfera, a species of krill, washed ashore in Unalaska causing an unusual attendance of whales and seabirds.

Role in response
Krill were collected, preserved and sent Alexei Pinchuk of the Alaska Sea Life Center for taxonomic identification and contaminant analysis.. Unalaska residents were warned not to comsume krill as they have been known to be harmful to bodily processes. Residents were also cautioned about the practices of responsible wildlife viewing.
