This class serves as an introduction to the structure of Alaskan Athabascan languages.   The approach taken is to start with a basic text in linguistics, Fromkin and Rodman’s Introduction to Language, but to develop the discussion using examples from Alaskan Athabascan languages.  Students will be exposed to conventional linguistic concepts and terminology, and will learn how these relate to the structure of Alaskan Athabascan languages.   To facilitate structural discussion, we will focus on the Ahtna language.  Students who wish to examine structures in a different Athabascan language that they know, or in a language they are currently studying, may do the assignments using examples from the language of their choice.
