Catalogue Description:  A survey of all Native languages of Alaska; particularly of the Indian languages: Athabascan-Eyak-Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian.  History, present and future; examples of language structure, present situation and prospects as a cultural force.  Open to all students.

Class Plan:  This class will focus on relationships:  relationships between Indian languages spoken in Alaska, between speakers of Native languages and speakers of European languages, between language acquisition and language education.   It is not necessary to have studied linguistics, but the class will be taught from a linguistic point of view, and some basic concepts will be covered in support of class content.  Each student will take five quizzes and a final exam, write a short paper (10 pages maximum) and present the material from the paper in class.  Grading breakdown is as follows:

5 Quizzes - 25% - worst grade discarded

Final exam - 25%

Short paper - 25%

Class presentation - 25%

Schedule for class presentations may vary from the preliminary calendar presented here; in fact the whole schedule may be changed around, but the grading schema will not change.
